Happy MLK Day!

It's a beautiful day to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We've been spending the day getting exercise and playing Ladderball. Ferrell is the biggest fan of Ladderball and played a good game this morning. Here's a picture to prove it!

On behalf of Martin Luther King Jr. and the legacy he left behind, we've included some inspiring quotes by him to show our appreciation and love for him and for each other.

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

"We must accept finite disappointment,
but never lose infinite hope."

"We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive.
He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love.
There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us.
When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies."

"Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend."

"That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind.
The time is always right to do the right thing."

Happy Friday!

Friday is always a party at Beehive Homes! We're prepping for the weekend festivities (eg. family visits and church on Sunday) by getting manicures and playing a round of Rummikub. We hope you all are having a wonderful and fun Friday as well. If not, here's a great rendition of the song, "Call Me Maybe," performed by residents at a nursing home. It's sure to put a smile on your face!

Bingo and Bing

Bingo is always the most anticipated activity here at Beehive Homes. While playing Bingo we sat and chatted about all sorts of memories and things we enjoy. When asked who their favorite singer was, many seemed to agree that Bing Crosby's music is always great to listen to.

It appears to be unanimous: Bing Crosby and Bingo are huge hits at Beehive Homes. Since we can't bring Bingo to all of you at once, we decided to at least bring some Bing Crosby to you to brighten your day!

Balloon Badminton

We spent the day working up a sweat while playing Balloon Badminton. We started off with a pretty small and lifeless balloon (not nearly enough air in it to keep it floating for long). It was a good challenge, but we decided to transition to a bigger balloon so we could catch a break while it floated in the air.

Rather than playing like actual badminton, we decided to make it more of a combined effort to not let the balloon touch the ground. Once we got the hang of it, we were able to go a good amount of time with it up in the air. Many people had awesome hits and great saves to keep the game going.

Since we were moving around so much it was hard to get a good picture of us in action, but we've included some alternative ways for you to play balloon badminton with your friends and family. We used a typical balloon and actual badminton rackets but here are some additional ideas. Enjoy!

- Make your own "rackets" with paper/plastic plates and a popsicle stick and decorate them
- Use fly swatters as rackets
- Use feet instead of rackets
- Include defenders that use butterfly nets to snag the balloon from the other team
- Put glow necklaces on rackets for glow in the dark balloon badminton
- Water Balloon Badminton for the brave of heart and for the hot summer days

Resident Council

Today we held our monthly Resident Council, where we chat with the residents at each home and ask how they are liking Beehive Homes. It was great to hear how much each resident enjoys their time here and fun to learn even more about their lives.

While visiting a newer resident, Bonnie, for Resident Council, she shared a sweet story of her time here at Beehive Homes. While reluctant of the thought of leaving her past home, she quickly warmed up to Beehive Homes and was able to feel comfortable right off the bat.

She went on to share that she had been gone this past weekend and upon her return, her room had been beautifully decorated with her many intriguing artifacts and paintings. For Bonnie, it has made her feel even more at home and she is able to reflect on the memories that some of her things bring to mind.

This painting is just one of Bonnie's gorgeous pieces of art. She told me it reminded her of time in Apple Valley, California. Amidst the setting sun, Bonnie looked over and saw a jack rabbit perched in nearly the same position as this one. With the sunset backdrop, it looked just like the painting, but of course not nearly as red.

We love having Bonnie with us at Beehive Homes and it was wonderful hearing how her experience with us has been!

Name That Song

Yesterday we enjoyed a nice flashback to the 1940's as we played, "Name that Song" with the most popular hits of the decade. "Chattanooga Choo Choo" by Glenn Miller was the most well-remembered song of the 40's. Another one that really got us taping our toes, clapping our hands, and even dancing around the room was "Buttons and Bows" by Dinah Shore. We've included a nice clip of the song so you too can enjoy the catchy tune.

Many people seemed to remember most of the lyrics and it was great hearing various memories they brought to mind like school dances and learning about music from parents. Inspired by the great music, Ferrell sang a couple songs for us afterwards while John did some backup singing. It was a fun time and great way to spend a snowy January day.

Happy New Year!

We hope everyone was able to enjoy ringing in the New Year and that it is off to a great start! Here at Beehive Homes we plan on making 2014 the best year yet. What are some of your New Years resolutions?

This past Tuesday we got a nice arm workout while playing a game of Beanbag Toss. With candy as the incentive, it was a hit and many were able to show off their rocket arms and precise aim. Who knows, maybe by the end of the year we'll be prepped to give some Major League Baseball players a run for their money. ;)

Then again, with beanbags as cute as these ones it might be hard to let them go too far out of our sight.
